Subject Information File relates to James Hogan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA annd National Forces in the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Although James Hogan did not claim pension for service prior to 1 April 1920, he states that he was a member of the Irish Volunteers from 1915. He claims membership of 4 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising but that due to his being at home [County Galway] at the time of the Rising, he took no part in it. He states that he continued his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in Dublin unil joining the East Clare Brigade, IRA following his appointment as Professor of History at University College Cork in May 1920. According to Hogan and [Michael] Brennan, James Hogan took part in IRA attacks/operations against British forces at Broadford, Cratloe, Caherhurley, Mountshannon, Kilrush and Ballycar in 1920 and 1921 during the War of Independence - exact dates not on file. Following the organisation of 1 Western Division IRA in [April] 1921, James Hogan became Divisional Director of Intelligence. In January 1922, during the Truce period, Hogan became Assistant Adjutant General in the National Army. During the Civil War he served as Adjutant with the South Western Command until early 1923. He states that he then served as Director of Training and Organisation and as Director of Intelligence until his retirement from the Army later that year James Hogan's date of retirement is variously given on file as July 1923 and November 1923. According to Gearoid O'Sullivan, Hogan was also sent to London by the Provisional Government as a military representative - date not on file. File includes: original signed typed and handwritten material submitted and signed by James Hogan in support of his application; draft and final typed copy letters (April 1944 and 19 April 1944) from the Private Secretary, Minister for Defence to Professor James Hogan, informing the recipient that the Minister considers the reasons put forward by Professor Hogan for his failure to apply for a service pension prior to the closing date of 31 December 1925 to be unsatisfactory, and that his application for a Certificate of Military Service under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924 is rejected; typed initialled note dated 7 June 1945, with handwritten initialled addendum dated 8 June 1945, and addressed to "Secretary" stating that following the receipt of information (not contained in the note) conveyed to the writer verbally it has been decided that Professor Hogan's application can be accepted and his case referred to the Referee, [Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; undated unsigned handwritten [notes of evidence given by James Hogan before the Board of Assessors, Military service Pensions Act, 1924]; handwritten and typed notes/transcript of sworn evidence given on 17 July 1945 by Professor James Hogan, General [Michael] Brennan and G[earoid] O'Sullivan, regarding James Hogan's service and activities; certified true typed copies of Officers Record Sheet regarding James Hogan and extract from "An t-Óglach" of 1 September 1923 regarding the retirement of Major General Seamus Hogan; material relating to the settlement and closure of James Hogan's service pension account following his death on 23 October 1963; material relating to the granting of a widow's allowance to Mary Hogan, widow of James Hogan from 1971 onwards - no date of death or reference to closure of this account on file.
