Subject Information File relates to Ellen O'Brien's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1935 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her step son IRA Private John O'Brien. File also relates to an unsuccessful application by Ellen O'Brien for an allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 in respect of John O'Brien. This second application was unsuccessful as it was decided that Ellen O'Brien was "...not a relative to whom Part II of the Army Pensions Act, 1953 applies" as she was John O'Brien's step mother and not his mother. John O'Brien died in September 1922 from the effects of wounds received by him in an engagement with National Army forces at Donoughmore, County Cork during the Civil War. John O'Brien's date of death is given by his step mother as 13 September 1922 and on his death certificate as 21 September 1922. Date of incident at Donoughmore unclear from the information on the file. Ellen O'Brien claims her step son was a member of the Irish Volunteers from 1916 although other references on file refer to his service as having commenced in 1921. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by Ellen O'Brien in support of her applications; representations on behalf of Ellen O'Brien from the Old I.R.A. Men's Association and P. J. McGrath TD; handwritten reports from investigating officers, Customs and Excise, Cork, regarding the circumstances and means of the O'Brien family and the degree of dependency of Ellen O'Brien on John O'Brien at the time of his death; and signed handwritten statements regarding John O'Brien's service from Frank Busteed, John O'Leary and Sean Nolan.
