Subject Information File relates to Elizabeth Jones’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of her son Thomas Jones who was shot and killed on 24 March 1923 at Adamstown, County Wexford. Applicant made a further unsuccessful application for an award under subsequent Army Pensions Acts. Copy report from Intelligence Office, Area Wexford states that on 23 March 1923 Privates Keane, Horan and Sergeant O’Gorman left Palace East and proceeded to a public house without permission. Stated that the Officer Commanding, Palace East received a report that the three soldiers created a disturbance and Lieutenant Jones and a Private [John] Croke proceeded to investigate. Lieutenant Jones and Private Croke were surrounded by members of the IRA upon entering the public-house and the latter was wounded while attempting to draw his revolver. Further reported that Lieutenant Jones, Private Horan and Sergeant O’Gorman were taken to Adamstown where their bodies were later discovered in an out-house near Adamstown. On the certificate of death Jones’ death is recorded as “deliberately shot dead at Adamstown on 24th March 1923 by some person or persons unknown”. Reference made to payment of Dependant's Allowance from Army Funds between 13 March 1922 and 31 March 1924. See A 65(2) Brigade Activity Report – operation 90. File contains: report from the Dublin Metropolitan Police detailing Elizabeth Jones’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; certificate of death. File also includes misfiled one page of evidence given by Private Michael Connelly at the inquest into the death of Patrick McMahon in March 1923.
