Subject Information The file relates to Michael Gaynor’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919 and his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. File also relates to subject's unsuccessful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts - disallowed due to excess means. This material is partly closed for reasons of data protection. During the War of Independence the applicant claims to have carried dispatches between Dublin and Limerick; claims to have raided for arms; claims to have been arrested under the Defence of the Realm Act, June 1918, interned for six months in Belfast Jail; claims to have been involved in the destruction of evacuated RIC barracks; claims to have raided Nenagh Station for petrol, military stores and Belfast goods; claims to have been involved in an attack on Borrisokane barracks (June 1920); claims to have joined an Active Service Unit; claims to have been involved in an engagement with the RIC in Nenagh after shooting a member of the RIC; claims to have been involved in the shooting of Lieutenant Hambleton at Lisboney (November 1920); claims to have been involved in an ambush at Letteragh; claims to have cut roads; claims to have been involved in Intelligence work; claims to have been involved in Republican police work, claims to have been involved in arresting a criminal carrying arms, Dwyer.
