The file relates to Peter O'Donovan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers in the service period between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1919 and his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. The applicant also unsuccessfully claimed for the service period between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1918.
During the War of Independence the applicant claims to have attended Battalion Council meetings, claims to have been Battalion Quartermaster; claims to have purchased arms, to the value of £300, from sailors and soldiers; claims to have made pikes and explosives; claims to have been an instructor at an officers training camp in Skibbereen, for a month; claims to have been involved in the burning of Cat Fort barracks, an Income Tax Office in South Terrace and Old Blackrock Road police barracks; claims to have been involved in the capture and execution of several spies, including Quinlick, "Blemings" (Blemens), Walsh and John Purcell; claims to have raided for arms; claims to have been involved in an attack on Farran police barracks; claims to have been involved in capturing and executing three British officers, Captain "Bree" [Green], Captain Chambers and Lieutenant Watts at Waterfall Railway Station; claims to have been involved in ambushes at Barrack Street (9 October 1920) and Parnell's Bridge (5 January 1921); claims to have been involved in the execution of a British soldier at [Aughessy] Street; claims to have been involved in the capture of mails at Old Blackrock Road; claims to have been sent to London, with Tadg Sullivan and Florence O'Donoghue, to try to execute Captain Koe/Coe (March 1921); arrested on 7 May 1921, held in Cork Jail. During the Truce period the applicant claims to have been released from Spike Island on 20 October 1921; claims to have been involved in the capture of "Upnor"; claims to have been involved in the taking over of Union Quay barracks and Victorian military barracks. During the Civil War the applicant claims to have been involved in the capture of Adare barracks and Ballymackeera (November 1922); claims to have been involved in engagements at Limerick City, Passage, Rochestown, Tubbereenmoire, Kilgarvan (November 1922), Hugh's Cross (December 1922), Ballineen, Kilcommon (January 1923), Durrus Road Bantry and Araglen/Araglin (May 1923); claims to have acted as a guard for delegates to a meeting with the army council; claims to have acted as a sniper.
