Subject Information File relates to the receipt by Susan Carroll and Kathleen Carroll of dependents' allowances under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of IRA Lieutenant Patrick Carroll, son and brother of the respective recipients. File also contains material relating to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar in respect of Patrick Carroll to his sister Kathleen Carroll in 1983. Patrick Carroll died on 20 September 1922 during the Civil War. His relatives and references on file state that he was killed by National Army forces after having been taken prisoner by them on or near Mount Benbulben in County Sligo. References state that Carroll was one of six IRA officers and men killed in this manner and at the same time and location by National Army forces. The others are named as Seamus Devins TD, Brian MacNeill, Harry (Henry) Benson, Thomas Langan and (Patrick) Joseph Banks. According to material on file Patrick Carroll had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA form 1917 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed on behalf of or by Susan and Kathleen Carroll in support of their various applications; original signed handwritten and copy typed statements regarding Patrick Carroll's service and death in support of the dependents' allowance and posthumous medal applications form Thomas Scanlon, James Keaveney, Joseph Pilkington, Francis Broderick, Dominick Harte, Bernard Lambe, Thomas O'Hara, Andrew Doocey and Patrick Mulligan; original signed and unsigned handwritten reports and related documentation submitted by Francis J. Broderick, Principal Teacher, Forthill Boys N. S., Sligo and Customs and Excise and Social Welfare officers, regarding investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Carroll family, the degree of dependency of Susan and Kathleen Carroll at the time of Patrick Carroll's death, and the applicants circumstances and means at the time of the making of their applications; material relating to the settlement and closure of Susan Carroll's dependents' allowance account following her death on 1 September 1950; representations in support of Kathleen Carroll's application for a posthumous medal for her brother form Ray MacSharry TD, Tánaiste and Minister for Finance; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed memoranda and correspondence (16 June 1982 - 24 January 1983) involving officials of the Department of Defence relating to the awarding of a posthumous medal for Patrick Carroll; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Kathleen Carroll's dependents allowance account following her death on 11 March 1995 - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
