The file relates to Patrick J. Costello's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers in the service period between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1919 and for his service in the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. The applicant also unsuccessfully claimed for the service periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1918.
During the War of Independence the applicant claims to have raided for arms; claims to have made explosives, munitions and pikes; claims to have been involved in attacks on the RIC barracks at Inch (July 1920) and Tiermaclane (August 1920 and 18 May 1921); claims to have disarmed soldiers at Ennis (23 June 1920); claims to have been involved in ambushes at Lissycasey (on a military lorry, 29 July 1920), Monreal, [Ennistymon] (18 December 1920), Cahera (19 January 1921) and Darragh (9 June 1921); claims to have been involved in an engagement at Darragh (29 July 1920); claims to have been involved in the capture of Ruan barracks (18 October 1920). During the Truce period the applicant claims to have attended a Divisional camp at Scariff (17 July to 30 July 1921); claims to have attended a Brigade camp at [Kilfenora] (August 1921); Battalion camp at Ballymacally (September 1921); claims to have been in [Fox's] Hotel, Limerick (January 1922); claims to have been sent to relieve Renmore barracks. During the Civil War the applicant claims to have defended Edenvale barracks (July 1922); claims to have been involved in an attack on Clarecastle; claims to have been involved in burning Clarecastle barracks; claims to have been involved in four engagements with the National Army at Darragh (July 1922); claims to have been involved in an attack on Clarecastle barracks (September 1922); claims to have gone to Limerick and Cork for guns and ammunition; claims to have captured four National Army officers; arrested 20 December 1922, released November 1923.
