Subject Information File relates to Mary Radford's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) in respect of her son IRA Captain Bernard Radford. File also contains material relating to the award of a gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) to Mary Radford in respect of her son IRA Commandant Michael Radford - see 2RB676 Michael Radford. Original application in both instances was made in the name of Bernard Radford Senior, father of Bernard and Michael Radford. The application was continued on in the name of Mary Radford following the death of Bernard Radford Senior on 21 June 1935. Bernard Radford died during the Civil War in Wexford County Hospital on 10 January 1923 from the effects of wounds received by him in an engagement with National Army forces at Spencerstown, County Wexford earlier that same day. According to information on file Bernard Radford had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence and Civil War from 1917 onwards. File includes: original handwritten material submitted on behalf of Bernard and Mary Radford in support of their applications; signed handwritten report from the Investigating Officer, Customs and Excise, Wexford, County Wexford regarding the circumstances and means of the Radford family and the degree of dependency of Bernard and Mary Radford on their sons at the time of their deaths; representations on behalf of the Radfords from the Minister for Agriculture (James Ryan TD); original initialled and signed handwritten memoranda (15 January - 24 May 1934) involving officials of the Department of Finance regarding the question of whether awards in respect of two individuals can be made to the same applicant; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence and related documentation (10 July 1934 - 31 October 1935) involving officials of the departments of Finance and Defence and the Army Pensions Board regarding the question of whether an award should be made in to Mary and Bernard Radford Senior and if so at what rate; signed handwritten statements regarding the service and death of Bernard Radford from Stephen Hayes and Thomas Howlett.
