File relates to Matthew Heffernan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA Private Michael Heffernan. This award was reduced from the sum of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) originally recommended by the Department of Defence. The final sum was agreed following objections from the Department of Finance and subsequent correspondence between the two departments and [arbitration from the Department of Education/Thomas Derrig TD, Minister for Education].
File also relates to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar in respect of Michael Heffernan to his brother Defence Forces Gunner 66586 Patrick Heffernan in [1945].
Michael Heffernan was killed in action against National Army forces on 9 September 1922 at Knockura, Drangan, County Tipperary. According to information on file Michael Heffernan had served with the IRA from 1920 onwards during the War of Independence and Civil War.
