Subject Information File relates to John Hopkins' receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service in the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 with the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1920. John Hopkins claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1918. During the War of Independence John Hopkins claims that he took part in arms raids and carried/delivered despatches. He also states that he took part in the IRA capture of Enniscrone Coastguard Station (1920) and an attack on a RIC patrol in which a Sergeant Armstrong was killed (1920). John Hopkins joined the National Army in May 1922 and served throughout the subsequent Civil War. He was discharged time expired from the Defence Forces on 26 March 1924 while serving at the rank of Private.
