Subject Information File relates to Michael Dwyer's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £85 (eighty five pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA Private John Dwyer. This award had been reduced from the initial recommendation by the Department of Defence of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) to the final amount following the recommendation of a lesser award by the Department of Finance and [arbitration between the two departments by Thomas Derrig TD, Minister fro Education]. File also relates to an application by Josephine Sheehan on behalf of her sister Julia Dwyer in respect of their brother John Dwyer. This application was regarded as withdrawn by the Department of Defence following the Department's receipt of the contents of a letter from Julia Dwyer to the Consul General, Consulate of Ireland, Chicago, United States of America, in which she stated that she had not made an application and was not dependent on her brother. John Dwyer was killed in action against National Army forces on 8 December 1922 at Droumacappal, Kealkie, County Cork during the Civil War. According to material on the file John Dwyer had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence and Civil War from 1918 onwards. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Michael Dwyer in support of his application; signed handwritten report dated 31 August 1933 from the Investigating Officer, Customs and Excise, Castletownbere, County Cork, regarding the circumstances and means of the Dwyer family and the degree of dependency of Michael Dwyer on his son at the time of the latter's death; representations on behalf of the various applicants from Tom Hales TD, T. O'Sullivan TD and E. Cotter TD; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence (4 April 1934 - 19 October 1936) involving officials of the departments of Finance and Defence regarding the question of the amount of gratuity to be paid to Michael Dwyer; initialled copy typed document dated 14 June 1934 giving applicants names, addresses and reference numbers of seven (7) applications under the Army Pensions Acts, including Michael Dwyer, regarding which the writer states that he/she has been informed by the "Private Secretary (Minister)" that the [Minister for Defence] had personally written to the President and acting Minister for Finance in April 1934; undated unsigned handwritten note headed "Michael Dwyer" showing [amount of awards recommended in this case by the departments of Defence and Finance and M. Derrig] and noting the final agreed amount of £85; material submitted and signed by Josephine Sheehan; original signed typed and copy typed draft and final correspondence (30 January - 18 April 1957) between the Secretary, Department of Defence and Sean G. Ronan, Consul General, Consulate of Ireland, Chicago, United States of America regarding arranging for an interview with Julia Dwyer regarding the application made on her behalf under the Army Pensions Acts, Julia Dwyer's statement to Sean G. Ronan that she had not filed a claim and was not dependent on John Dwyer and Julia Dwyer's request that the name of the person who had filed the claim on her behalf be forwarded to her and the forwarding of the details of the claim by the Department of Defence to the Consul General and the decision by the Department of Defence to regard the application as withdrawn; and signed handwritten statements regarding John Dwyer's service and death from Ted O' Sullivan and Michael Crowley.
