Subject Information |
File relates to Patrick O'Daly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with Fianna Éireann during the week of 23 to 29 April 1916, his subsequent internment and later service from 1917 to 1923 through the War of Independence and Civil War with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Army.
Patrick O'Daly claims to have been in command of attack on Magazine Fort during Easter Rising. During 1917 O'Daly served as a member of the Executive of Fianna Éireann and from 1918 to 1919 served successively as a Company Commanding Officer and Battalion Vice Commandant with the Irish Volunteers. He was imprisoned from January to July 1919 after which he joined the IRA General Headquarters Active Service Unit - the Squad - serving as its commanding officer for a time up to his arrest on 23 November 1920. During that time references state that claimant participated in most Squad operations including: the killing of Jack Byrnes/John Jameson (2 March 1920) and Detective Henry Kells (13 April 1920); attempted assasinations of Sir John French and General Sir Neville Macready; and operations on 21 November 1920 (Bloody Sunday). Subject was released in March 1921. During the Truce period subject became Officer Commanding Dublin Guards and served with the National Army in Dublin during the fighting in June and July 1922 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He later also served in County Kerry. Claimant resigned from the Defence Forces in March 1924 while serving at the rank of Major General.
File includes: signed statements regarding subject from Aodh MacNeill (Hugo MacNeill), Sean McMahon and Richard Mulcahy; reference to claimant's employment with the Office of Public Works as the Overseer at the Governor General's Residence; material relating to his service with the Defence Forces during the Emergency (Second World War) from [1940 to 1945]; and reference to his wife and to his executor Joseph Leonard 24SP2671.
