Subject Information File relates to Julia Casey's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity in 1937, and a dependents' allowance between 1953 and her death in 1965, under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private Jeremiah Casey. File also relates to unsuccessful applications under the same legislation from Patrick Casey and Hannah McCarthy, father and sister respectively of Jeremiah Casey. Jeremiah Casey was shot and killed on 5 December 1922 at Gortnalicky, Macroom, County Cork during the Civil War. It is stated that Casey was in the custody of National Army forces at the time of his death. According to material on the file Jeremiah Casey had served with the IRA during the War of Independence and Civil War from 1920 onwards. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by Patrick Casey, Julia Casey and Hannah McCarthy in support of their various applications; reports from Customs and Excise and Social Welfare investigating officers regarding the circumstances and means of the Casey and McCarthy families and the degree of dependency of the various applicants on Jeremiah Casey at the time of his death - partly closed; representations on behalf of the various applicants from T. J. Murphy TD (1935), E. Cotter TD (1968), Thomas Meany TD (1969-1970), Charles Browne and D. Creed TD (1970); material relating to the settlement and closure of Julia Casey's dependents' allowance following her death on 11 July 1965; and signed handwritten statements regarding Jeremiah Casey's IRA service and death from Daniel Corkery.
