Subject Information File relates to Patrick Durkin's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA Private James Durkin. Patrick Durkin's application was unsuccessful as he was found not to have been dependent on his son at the time of the latter's death. James Durkin died from Pulmonary Phthisis on 11 February 1922. According to material on the file James Durkin had served with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from 1917. Patrick Gibbons states that during the War of Independence Durkin took part in IRA attacks on British forces at Partry on 7 March 1921 and at Tourmakeady on 3 May 1921. File includes: material signed and submitted on behalf of Patrick Durkin by Gerald Maguire, Solicitor; medical certificates relating to James Durkin's illness and death; reports from the Investigating Officer, Customs and Excise, Ballinrobe, County Mayo regarding the circumstances and means of the Durkin family and the degree of dependency of Patrick Durkin on his son at the time of his death; signed handwritten statement from Patrick Gibbons regarding subject's IRA service and death.
