File relates to Winifred Durcan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £80 (eighty pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Officer John Durcan. File also relates to a further unsuccessful application by Winifred Durcan for an award under the Army Pensions Act, 1937.
John Durcan was killed in action during an IRA attack on a National Army post at Ballymote, County Sligo on 13 September 1922 during the Civil War. According to evidence on file John Durcan had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence and Civil War from 1918 onwards.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by and on behalf of Winifred Durcan in support of her applications; handwritten reports from the investigating officers, Customs and Excise, Tobercurry (sic), County Sligo, and Swinford, County Mayo, regarding the circumstances and means of the Durcan family and the degree of dependency of Winifred Durcan on her son at the time of his death; original signed typed, copy typed, initialled, signed and unsigned handwritten correspondence and memoranda involving officials of the departments of Defence and Finance regarding the level of gratuity to be awarded to Winifred Durcan - includes unsigned undated handwritten note [recording the level of gratuity award recommended in this case by the departments of Defence and Finance and Mr. Derrig (Minister for Education) acting as arbitrator] (4 April 1934 - 30 September 1936); representations on behalf of Winifred Durcan from Frank Carty TD and the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (Gerald Boland TD); and signed handwritten statements regarding John Durcan's IRA service and death from Frank Carty TD and Martin Brennan.
