Subject Information File relates to Mary Benson's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1933 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Captain Henry Benson. It would appear from the file that the body of Henry Benson was found at Ardnaglass Upper, County Sligo on 2 October 1922. Death was certified as having been due to shock and haemorrhage arising from gunshot wounds to the head and date of death was given as on or about 21 September 1922. According to Mary Benson and other references on file, Henry Benson had been shot dead by members of the National Army after being captured by them on or in the vicinity of Mount Benbulben. Letter dated 29 December 1932 and signed by Mary Benson states that her son was one of a total of six IRA officers and men killed at this time and in this manner. References also state that Henry Benson had served with the IRA during the War of Independence and was captured and imprisoned by the British authorities in Sligo, Derry and Ballykinlar from December 1920 to [December 1921/January 1922]. Mary Benson also states that she had another son [Dominick] Benson serving with the IRA during the War of Independence and Civil War and that she herself had been arrested and detained by British forces for a number of days during the War of Independence. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by or on behalf of Mary Benson in support of her application; signed handwritten representation on behalf of Mary Benson from Thomas C. Flynn; signed handwritten reports from the Investigating Officer, Customs and Excise, Sligo regarding the circumstances and means of the Benson family and the degree of dependency of Mary Benson on her son at the time of his death; signed handwritten statements regarding Henry Benson's service and death from Peadar Glynn, Martin B. McGowan, Alderman John Lynch, Mayor of Sligo and Thomas Scanlon; signed handwritten letter dated 19 November 1953 from Agnes J. Martin requesting application form for an award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her brother Henry Benson - no such application form found on file.
