Subject Information File relates to the receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1933 under the Army Pensions Acts by Julia Behan Senior in respect of her son IRA Officer Thomas Behan. File also relates to a further unsuccessful application by Julia Behan Senior for a dependents' allowance in 1938 and 1939 and the receipt by her daughter Julia Behan Junior of an allowance in respect of her brother Thomas Behan under the Army Pensions Acts between 1960 and 1998. Thomas Behan died on 13 December 1922 at the Curragh Camp, County Kildare from the effect of a gunshot wound received while in National Army custody. He was allegedly trying to escape when shot. He had been captured with a number of other members of an IRA Active Service Unit at an IRA dug out at Moore's Bridge, County Kildare on [12 December] 1922. According to material on the file seven other unnamed individuals captured with Behan were subsequently executed on 19 December 1922. References state that Thomas Behan had been arrested and interned following the 1916 Easter Rising and served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence as a Company Lieutenant. It is also stated that he was arrested/captured by British forces in May 1921 and detained at the Rath Camp until December 1921/January 1922. References state that during the Civil War he served as an IRA intelligence officer before joining the Active Service Unit with which he was captured. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Julia Behan Senior and Junior in respect of their various applications; reports and related documentation from Customs and Excise and Social Welfare investigating officers regarding the circumstances and means of the Behan family and the degree of dependency of Julia Behan senior and junior on Thomas Behan at the time of the latter's death - partly closed; signed handwritten statements regarding Thomas Behan's IRA service and death from Patrick Brennan, Michael Ryan, Thomas Harris, James Moran, Michael Joseph Dunne and P. J. Byrne; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Julia Behan Junior's allowance following her death 28 September 1998 - material relating to surviving relatives closed.
