Subject Information File relates to Honora Canty's receipt of a partial dependents’' gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private Godfrey Canty. File also relates to an unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts by Mary Canty, sister of Godfrey Canty. According to Liam Deasy, Godfrey Canty was carrying out an IRA Brigade order to collect all cycles and motor cycles in the area when he was surprised by a British military patrol and killed on 09 May 1921 during the War of Independence. Deasy also states that Canty had been a member of the IRA from 1919. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by Honora and Mary Canty in support of their applications; representations on behalf of Honora Canty from Sean Moylan TD; signed handwritten reports from Customs and Excise and Social Welfare investigating officers regarding the circumstances and means of the Canty family and the degree of dependency of Honora and Mary Canty on Godfrey Canty at the time of the latter's death; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence (13 August 1934 - 30 September 1936), involving the departments of Finance and Defence, regarding the questions of whether and how great an award should be made to Honora Canty; medical examinations and reports relating to Mary Canty; and signed handwritten statement from Liam Deasy regarding Godfrey Canty's IRA service and death.
