Subject Information File relates to John Joseph Cleary's unsuccessful application for a military service pension in respect of his claimed service with the IRA in the service periods between April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File also relates to John Lacey's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar and to his widows' unsuccessful applications for allowances between 1971 and 1980. John Joseph Cleary claims to have served as an IRA Company Adjutant during the War of Independence and to have taken part in arms raids, road blocking, guarding of Flying Column/Active Service Unit, guarding RIC District Inspector Potter and the burning of Newcastle RIC Barracks and the home of a Captain Parry. During the Civil War Cleary claims to have served as a Brigade Assistant Adjutant and Brigade Adjutant with 3 Tipperary Brigade IRA. He states that he was captured by National Army forces at Castleblake, Rosegreen, County Tipperary in April 1923 - also referred to as "Blakes Castle" and "Blackcastle" on file - in the same incident in which Edward Somers and Theobald English were killed. He further states that he was subsequently interned in Clonmel, Kilkenny and Hare Park until June 1924 and that he took part in a hunger strike during his internment. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by John Joseph Cleary in support of his service pension and service medal applications; handwritten statement regarding subject's medal application signed by John Lonergan and Richard Dalton; and representations on behalf of Margaret Cleary from Sean Treacy TD Ceann Comhairle and Senator Willie Ryan.
