Subject Information Files relate to Joseph Liffey’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of active service in the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. In Liffey’s application dated 23 December 1924, he outlines his personal circumstances and states he is unemployed and in ill health. References in support of Liffey’s claim of active service in the period 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 are provided by Colonel M. Costello, Commandant Liam Hoolan and Lieutenant Tim Gleeson. Referees collectively account for Liffey’s rank and service during the period certified and link Liffey to the following activities and actions; raids on houses of enemy supporters; raid on Borrisokane Barracks (Royal Irish Constabulary) and members of Royal Irish Constabulary at Latteragh and Reaskil Creamery during period 1 April 1920 to 31 March 1921; attack on enemy forces at separate times at Modreeny, Glenaguile, Portroe and Toomyvara during period 1 April to 11 July 1921; According to the testimony of referees and detailed in Liffey’s application and associated paperwork, the applicant enlisted in the National Army at Nenagh Barracks, Tipperary on 22 February 1922 and served until 28 March 1924.
