Subject Information File relates to Nora Somers receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1935 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her brother IRA Divisional Staff Captain Edward Somers. IRA Captain Edward Somers was killed in action on 16 April 1923 at Castleblake, Rosegreen, County Tipperary in an exchange of fire with National Army forces during the Civil War. Fellow IRA officer Theobald English was killed and John Cleary taken prisoner in the same incident - see also DP241 Theobald English. According to material on the file Edward Somers had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from December 1918 to June 1922 during the War of Independence and Truce period. It is stated that during the Civil War he served with the National Army from July 1922 until joining the IRA in December 1922. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by Nora Somers in support of her application; material relating to report of Customs and Excise investigating officer as to the circumstances and means of the Somers family and the degree of dependency of Nora Somers on her brother at the time of his death; medical certificates regarding Nora Somers illness and disability; representations on behalf of Nora Somers from Senator William Quirke and Andrew Fogarty TD; misfiled material (19 November - 20 December 1934) relating to an application under the Army Pensions Acts by a Mary Somers in respect of her son William - file reference 52APB29; signed handwritten statements verifying Edward Somers service and the circumstances surrounding his death from Senator Seamus Robinson, James Kelly, James Leahy, Senator William (Bill) Quirke and Sean Hayes.
