Subject Information File relates to Mary English's receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £80 (eighty pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA officer Theobald English - this award was reduced from £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) as recommended by the Department of Defence in August 1933 by the Department of Finance.. File also relates to Mary English's application for an allowance in respect of her son under the Army Pensions Act, 1953. Mary English died on 10 November 1953 before approval was given by the Department of Finance to the Department of Defence's recommendation of the granting of an award. Theobald English was killed in action on 16 April 1923 at Castleblake, Rosegreen, County Tipperary during an exchange of fire with National Army forces during the Civil War. According to material on the file another IRA officer Ned Somers was killed and a further officer named John Cleary was wounded and taken prisoner. File includes: original signed handwritten and typed and copy handwritten and typed material submitted by Mary English in support of her applications; signed handwritten and typed statements and letters regarding Mary English's application from Dan Breen TD, Con Moloney, Secretary, National Executive IRA Old Comrades' Association, Senator William (Bill) Quirke, Michael J. Keyes TD, and P. Fitzpatrick, Honorary Secretary, IRA Old Comrades Association; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence and supporting documentation (8 August 1933 - 30 September 1936) involving officials of the departments of Defence and Finance and the Army Pensions Board regarding the decision, and discussions surrounding that decision, as to the amount of the gratuity to be paid to Mary English; material relating to the report of the Customs and Excise investigating officer as to the circumstances and means of the English family and the degree of dependency of Mary English on Theobald English at the time of the latter's death; material relating to the granting of a gratuity of £47.18.8 (forty seven pounds, eighteen shillings and eight pence sterling) under the Army Pensions Acts to the relatives of Mary English following her death - including original signed handwritten and copy typed material relating to the opinion of the Attorney General as to whether Section 12 of Army Pensions Act, 1949 applied to allowances granted under Part II of the Army Pensions Act, 1953; signed handwritten statements regarding Theobald English's IRA service and the circumstances surrounding his death from John Cleary, William Tobin, John Lonergan, Senator William Quirke and Sean Hayes.
