Subject Information File relates to Timothy Daly's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) in 1938 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA member Michael Daly. Michael Daly died on 7 December 1922 at Portlaoise Prison. Michael Daly was being detained there following his capture by National Army Forces at Golden, County Limerick during an engagement there between IRA and National Army Forces in July 1922 during the Civil War. Cause of death given as syncope from tonsilitis and pre-existing heart disease on death certificate. According to references on the file Michael Daly had service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence and had taken part in an attack on British/RIC forces at Ballinhassig, Cork - date not on file. According to Michael Walsh, Daly was arrested by British forces shortly after this attack and held for about 24 hours during which he was beaten and threatened with being shot if he did not give information regarding the Ballinhassig attack and the IRA.
