Subject Information File relates to Annie Kelly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. File also relates to Annie Kelly's receipt of an award under the Army Pensions Acts between 1966 and her death in 1973. Annie Kelly claims membership of Cumann na mBan from February 1920 but also states that she was associated with the Irish Volunteers from 1918. During the War of Independence Annie Kelly served as a Branch Secretary and a District Council President with Cumann na mBan. She states that she undertook organisational work, training and lecturing work for Cumann na mBan. She also claims that she carried despatches, collected funds and nursed a wounded IRA man Patrick Coleman at her home. She was also present under orders to render first aid at an unsuccessful IRA ambush at Clydagh, County Mayo and at a proposed attack on Ballycastle Barracks in 1921 - exact dates not on file. She also states that her home was raided and that she was mistreated by British forces. During the Truce period Annie Kelly continued her training, lecturing and organisational work for Cumann na mBan and attended that organisations Convention 22-23 October 1921. During the Civil War Annie Kelly assisted the anti-Treaty IRA forces. She was present at Glen Lodge during fighting between IRA and National Forces [July 1922], was with IRA forces that captured and occupied Ballina, County Mayo in September 1922, and that same month attended IRA officer Thomas Ruane (MSP34REF20337) at Glenlossera, County Mayo after he had been wounded. She also visited prisoners, carried despatches from prisoners and collected for and distributed aid to prisoners' dependents and to have been with IRA forces in Ballycastle, County Mayo during fighting there in 1923. File includes: handwritten material submitted and signed by Annie Kelly in support of her service pension application; undated unsigned handwritten notes referring to first aid lectures, military training and Irish language classes held and the [Cumann na mBan] branch accounts; undated unsigned original copy printed document with handwritten notes/annotations entitled "Attendance of Executive for 1920-1921" detailing the number of meetings held, listing the names of the members and provincial representatives and the numbers of meeting each listed individual had attended; original copy notice "to be read at full Branch Meeting" dated 12 September 1921 from Cumann na mBan Headquarters, announcing the holding of the Cumann na mBan Convention on 22-23 October 1921, detailing the Branch representation expected at the Convention, requesting that details of delegates to attend, suggestions for organisational improvements and nominations for the Executive be forwarded before 1 October next, providing information regarding of how delegates will be informed of the Convention location, advising as to suitable places of accommodation, stating that it is proposed to provide a week's training to all delegates able to remain in Dublin after the Convention, and urging Branches to collect/gather clothing stores for the [IRA] for a possible 'winter campaign'; original printed copy of agenda for Cumann na mBan Annual Convention 22-23 October 1921; original printed copy of President's Address to the Cumann na mBan Convention 22-23 October 1921 with "Read This To Your Branch" stamped at top left hand corner of page; printed card/notice in Irish for dance to be held at Castle Lacken, County Mayo on 11 December 1921; [original] handwritten letter dated 17 November 1921 from B. [E.] Finnerty, Drimnangle, Moygownagh, Crossmolina writing at the direction of her [Cumann na mBan] Branch to Mrs Kelly, Barnhill requesting information and documentation relating to first aid lectures; original signed handwritten letter dated 5 December 1921 from Sighle Nic Aamhlaoibh, Cumann na mBan Headquarters, Dublin addressed to "A chara" informing the recipient that the writer has received the letter (not on file) sent to her by the recipient on 22 November last enclosing the names of officers elected, enclosing a copy of the new scheme of organisation (not on file) and requesting the recipient to write again in ten days when [she] will be forwarded a copy of the constitution; original typed circular letter dated 9 February 1922 from Eilis Nic Eachnaidh and Sighle Nic Amhlaoibh, Cumann na mBan Headquarters, Dublin enclosing a specimen copy of the "Republic of Ireland" newspaper (not on file), strongly recommending the recipients to order copies and requesting that one or more of the article from this paper "..be read and debated at your meetings."; original printed notice issued by Cumann na mBan Headquarters, Dublin, signed by Eilis Nic Eachnaidh and Sighle Nic Amhlaoibh, dated 24 February 1922, stating their position that the acceptance of "Dominion Home Rule is a denial of the Republic and hence treason to it" ordering members not to work for anyone supporting "Dominion Home Rule" during "coming elections", stating that any members who support a Free State candidate cannot stay in the organisation, directing that where only a minority of a branch's membership supports the resolution passed at the Cumann na mBan Convention of 5 February 1922 opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921, that the minority are empowered to elect their own officers and carry on working in the name of Cumann na mBan, and demanding that branches which totally oppose that resolution forward their funds to Cumann na mBan headquarters immediately; [original] signed handwritten letters of 28 March, 29 May and 4 July 1922 from Celia A. McDonnell, Kincon, Killala, County Mayo addressed to "Mrs. Kelly" informing her of a meeting at Farmhill Barracks and referring to the possibility of making the arrangements for a [District Council] meeting at the meeting at Farmhill ,requesting the recipient to "come to give us a lecture" and enquiring about a [District Council] meeting, and informing the recipient of a [District Council] meeting to be held at Killala; [original] signed handwritten letter dated 4 July 1922 from Mairgreíd ní Suibhne, Pearse Street, Ballina addressed to "A chara" requesting the recipient to call a meeting of her Cumann na mBan branch which the writer will attend which may also be attended by the "O.C ..if it is possible to get him to give you a lecture."; original permit issued 4 August 1922 to Mrs Kelly by J. Healey, Headquarters, North Mayo Brigade, IRA, Ballina granting her permission to visit prisoners with parcels; [original] permit issued 4 August 1922 by Joseph Healy, Oglaigh Na h-Eireann (sic), Headquarters, North Mayo Brigade, Ballina, to Pat Clarke allowing him to travel from Castlebar to Ballina and back with a Ford Car and two passengers; typed summary (1 page) and transcript of sworn statement (4 pages) made by Annie Kelly on 22 July 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes relating to discussions held regarding subject's service and activities with Messrs Kilcawley and Ruane, Miss M.
