Subject Information File relates to Daniel Byrne's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: raids on Income Tax Offices Carlow [May 1920]; attack on RIC at Tullow (8 September 1920); and an attempted attack on an RIC District Inspector that did not come off. Applicant also claims he took part in raids for arms, disrupted communications and protected Sinn Féin meetings. Applicant claims he went on the run in December 1920 because he was attacked by police who put a revolver in his mouth looking for information on the attack on RIC in Tullow. During the Truce period applicant claims he attended a Brigade training camp at Duckett's Grove and was promoted to Battalion Quartermaster. During the Civil War applicant claims he initially served with a flying column (active service unit) under Ernie O'Malley and [] Sheehan. He claims he later served with a column under Thomas O'Connell made up from members of 3 Battalion and they took part in some activities with the 1 Battalion column. He states he fought against National Army forces in an attack on Carlow Barracks [July 1922], at Borris [July 1922] and Fenagh [August or September 1922]. Applicant also claims he sniped on barracks in Tullow, raided the Civic Guard Station, the State Solicitor's Office and the Post Office in Tullow. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Byrne in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Michael Keating and Mícheál O Riain; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by Carlow IRA brigade committee; typed transcript (5 pages) of sworn statement made by Daniel Byrne on 10 May 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes relating to discussion(s) held regarding claimant's service and activities with Messrs O'Riain and Behan; correspondence from the Irish Land Commission dated 12 April 1937 referring to subject's application for land; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his widow and surviving next of kin - partly closed.
