Subject Information File relates to Richard Boland's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: demolition of Dolla RIC Barracks (date not recorded); outpost duty for attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks (June 1920); unsuccessful ambushes at Ballygibbon and Kilmore (dates not recorded); and assisted in capturing two (2) RIC men at Lisboney (date not recorded). Applicant also claims he arranged billets for the active service unit (flying column) when in his area; arranged guards for Brigade Council meetings held in his area and disrupted communications. He also refers to an unnamed sister involved in despatch work. During the Truce period applicant claims he attended training camps. During the Civil War applicant claims he did intelligence work and disrupted communications until his capture 13 January 1923. He was interned in Templemore Barracks and Tintown number 2 camp until his release in November 1923. He states he underwent hunger strike in October-November 1923 while interned. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Boland in support of his application; signed handwritten letter regarding subject's service and activities from Seán Gaynor; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by 1 Tipperary Brigade Committee; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Richard Boland on 26 March 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement by Patrick McDonnell on behalf of Boland; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension following his death and to his surviving children - partly closed. DP44205: file contains application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts (dated 16 February 1967) however, it is noted that his yearly means exceeded 'the appropriate annual sum' and therefore his application was rejected. (some documents closed; Data Protection).
