File relates to Patrick Darcy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920.
During the War of Independence applicant claims he took part in two (2) attacks on Bansha RIC Barracks (26 May 1921 and 25 June 1921). Applicant also claims he did police work, provided an armed escort for Denis Lacey's Flying Column (Active Service Unit) from Lisnagaul ambush to Dranganmore (13 November 1920), took part in the destruction of railways at Cappa and Ballydrehid Railway Bridge (4 Jul y1921); took part in the disruption of communications and the implementation of the Belfast Boycott.
During the Truce period applicant claims he did police duty in his company area and did garrison duty in Bansha Barracks. During the Civil War applicant claims he served with aa active service unit and took part in fighting against National Army forces at Urlingford Barracks (4 July 1922), in an ambush at Longford Pass (5 July 1922) and in two (2) attacks on Bansha National Army post (13 November 1922 and February 1923).
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Darcy in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from John Merrick, William Dalton, Michael Boddy, Patrick Maher, Charlie Compton, James Dalton, Thomas Condon and Patrick O'Connell; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Patrick Darcy on 24 March 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement by William Quirke and Sean Fitzpatrick on behalf of Darcy; Widows of Veterans of the War of Independence travel card issued to Mary Darcy in October 1972; and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed.
