Subject Information File relates to Frank Dwyer's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1919. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: serving as an armed guard for Dan Breen, Sean Treacy and Sean Hogan for two days (June 1919); acted as scout for the shooting of two (2) RIC men at Toomevara (March 1920); destruction of Borrisokane RIC Barracks (June 1920); and prepared ambushes at Cloughjordan and Toomevara that did not come off. Applicant also claims he served as a despatch carrier for 2 Battalion area. Applicant states he was arrested 1 March 1921, charged with the capture of an unnamed British spy, sentenced to five (5) years penal servitude and imprisoned in Templemore, Limerick, Cork Jail and Spike Island until 15 January 1922. While in Spike Island he claims he was involved in the burning of huts and forty-eight (48) hours on hunger strike. During the Civil War applicant claims he served with Patrick McDonnell's active service unit (flying column), fought against National Army forces at Nenagh (July 1922) and sniped enemy posts in his area. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Dwyer in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Frank McGrath, Seán Gaynor, William Meagher, Denis O'Neill, John Hackett and John Harty; typed transcript (7 pages) of sworn statement made by Frank Dwyer on 12 March 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement made by Patrick McDonnell on behalf of Dwyer; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his widow. DP3811: file contains wound pension application (in respect of injury to toe and abdomen) and MS Registration Board paper work. Also contains a copy of record of medical treatment when applicant was detained in Cork Prison and typed statement of applicant (1 May 1936). However it was found that the applicant's injuries did not lead to any degree of disablement and therefore, no award could be made.
