Subject Information File relates to Rody McCormack's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: attack on Portroe RIC Barracks (January 1921); sniping on Portroe Barracks and dismantling of Portroe post office. Applicant also claims he lay in ambush several times unsuccessfully, raided for arms, carried despatches, disrupted communications and collected IRA levy. During the Truce period applicant claims he did police work. During the Civil War applicant served on the 1 Tipperary Brigade flying column (active service unit) and took part in Bushfield ambush (August 1922), Boher ambush (September 1922), sniping on Killaloe, ambushes at Kilcommon and Upperchurch [December 1922], ambush at Cloughjordan and attack on a train at Castleconnell. He claims the column was surrounded at Killnascully shortly before the cease fire and they had to fight their way out. He could not return home until 1924. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by McCormack in support of his application; signed handwritten letter regarding subject's service and activities from Sean Carroll; typed transcript (4 pages) of sworn statement made by Rody McCormack on 4 March 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement made by Patrick McDonnell on behalf of McCormack; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed. DP32406 File relates to subject's application for Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts, 1943 to 1959. Allowance awarded in 1960, upon proof of applicant being incapable of self support by reason of permanent infirmity.
