Subject Information File relates to Joseph Starr's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1919. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: armed raid on retired County Inspector Galway Foley's residence, Inspector later died of wounds (date not recorded); raid on railway (May 1920) and attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks (April 1920). Applicant claims he joined an active service unit (flying column) under Sean Gaynor and Ned O'Leary, this is not credited in his Referee's Report. He states that he took part in an engagement at Kilcommon and an ambush at Modreeny (dates not recorded). He also claims he was in the shooting of "Captain Hamilton" (probably Lieutenant H. J. Hambleton) at Knockalton, Nenagh with Ned O'Leary (November 1920) and took part in the burning of military lorries. He refers to his brother, Captain Patrick Starr, who was killed 1 May 1921 (1D114) During the Truce period applicant claims he was suffering from blood poisoning but served in Templemore Barracks, Nenagh and Crinkle Barracks in Birr and he states that he was in Mullingar when the post office there was attacked (date not recorded). He took part in fighting against National Army forces at Nenagh. Applicant claims he was obliged to immigrate to the United States of America after the cease-fire.
