Subject Information |
File relates to John Kennedy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920.
During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: attack on Portroe RIC Barracks (January 1921); ambush near Portroe (date not recorded) and dismantling of Portroe Post Office (date not recorded). Applicant also claims he raided for arms, carried despatches, disrupted communications, lay in ambush on several occasions and collected an IRA levy. Applicant states that his house was burned down in January 1921 and he and two (2) borthers were arrested and beaten [March 1921] but applicant escaped the same day.
At the start of the Civil War applicant claims he served in Birr Barracks and Mullingar and then returned home. He states that he joined a flying column (active service unit) and took part in ambushes at Bushfield [August 1922] and Boher [September 1922], sniped on Killaloe barracks [October 1922] and fought against National Army forces at Kilcommon, Creaney and Upperchurch. Applicant also refers to ambushes at Moneygall and Castlelough and to attacks on trains at Castleconnell, Roscrea and Tipperary (dates not recorded). He claims the column was surrounded in Killoscully and again in Dromineer (dates not recorded) and on both occasions they had to fight their way out. Applicant claims he could not safely return home until late 1924.
File (DP7339) relates to Kennedy's unsuccessful application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries sustained by him while serving with the IRA. Also includes claimant's successful application for a Special Allowance.
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Kennedy in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Martin Ryan, Sean O'Carroll and Sean Gaynor; typed transcript (7 pages) of sworn statement made by John Kennedy on 28 February 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement made by Patrick McDonnell on behalf of Kennedy; medical report on an ex-IRA member claiming disability in respect of service; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed.
