Subject Information File relates to Daniel O'Neil's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: raid on Borrisokane Income Tax Office; destruction of Ballinderra RIC Barracks; attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks (date not recorded); prepared ambushes at Modreeny and Cloughjordan. Applicant also claims he took part in disruption of communications, raids for arms, raids on mails and did police duty at a holy well at Curraheen. O'Neil states that his home was burned in June 1921 by Crown Forces as a reprisal. During the Truce period applicant attended training camps and went into Nenagh Barracks from April 1922 until the outbreak of the Civil War. During the Civil War applicant states that he served with Paddy McDonnell's Flying Column (Active Service Unit) and took part in fighting against National Army forces in Nenagh and O'Briens Bridge Barracks. He did outpost duty at Birdhill and Ballina and returned home in [July 1923]. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by O'Neil in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Sean Kenny, Denis O'Neill and Sean Gaynor; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Daniel O'Neill on 12 November 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed.
