Subject Information File relates to James Murphy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: the shooting of RIC Detective Inspector Hunt in Thurles [June 1919]; ambush at Lackamore, Newport (date not recorded); attack on Rear Cross Barracks (July 1920); attack on Black and Tans (RIC) at Kilcommon (December 1920); attack on an RIC man at Garavane, Rearcross (date not recorded); attack at Knockfune (June 1921) During the Truce period applicant attended training camps and went into Nenagh Barracks. Applicant claimed rank of Company Captain on first critical date (12 July 1921) and of Brigade Transport Officer on second critical date (1 July 1922) however his R.15 form states that there was no rank shown on record for him. During the Civil War applicant states that he took part in fighting against National Army forces at Nenagh, Ballywilliam, Boher, Silvermines, Foilduff, Curreens, Tullamoylan, Toomevara and others. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Murphy in support of his application; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from the relevant brigade committee; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by James Murphy on 20 July 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed.
