Subject Information File relates to Patrick Horan’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his son Patrick Horan who was shot and killed on 24 March 1923 at Adamstown, County Wexford. Applicant claims that deceased was a former member of the Royal Irish Regiment and served in World War I. Letter from Commandant S Gallagher OC, 41 Battalion to the Discipline Office, GHQ, Portobello states that Horan with another two soldiers went to a public-house “they created a scene there and were drunk and disorderly…Lieutenant Jones and another soldier proceeded to the house…surrounded by Irregulars…taken prisoners to Adamstown, where they were riddled with bullets by a man believed to be O’Rahilly from Dublin”. See A 65(2) Brigade Activity Report – operation 90. Copy report from Intelligence Office, Area Wexford states that on 23 March 1923 Privates Keane, Horan and Sergeant O’Gorman left Palace East and proceeded to a public house without permission. Stated that the Officer Commanding, Palace East received a report that the three soldiers created a disturbance and Lieutenant Jones and a Private [John] Croke proceeded to investigate. Lieutenant Jones and Private Croke were surrounded by members of the IRA upon entering the public-house and the latter was wounded while attempting to draw his revolver. Private John Croke in his statement states that while he and Lieutenant Jones were in McCabes public-house Sergeant Gorman and Private Horan entered “…had one drink and then they left…about five minutes later a crowd of Irregulars entered the public-house, firing on both Lieu[tenant] Jones and myself. I was wounded…Lieut[enant] Jones was then taken away”. Reference made to payment of Dependant's Allowance from Army Funds. File contains: report from an Garda Síochána detailing Patrick Horan’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; copy report from Intelligence Office, Area Wexford; copy statement of Private John Croke into the death of Horan.
