Subject Information |
File relates to Denis O'Dwyer's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
Applicant claims he joined the IRA in August 1917 and served until 1926. O'Dwyer claims he took part in raids for arms during conscription crisis, including a raid on RIC District Inspector Siney, Newport and in September 1919 he enforced a boycott of RIC by shooting two (2) horses belonging to Newport merchants who supplied the RIC. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: attacks on Murroe [January 1920] and Doon RIC barracks (February 1920); ambush at Lackamore (April 1920); attacks on RIC man near Rear Cross (May 1920), at Cappawhite Barracks (June 1920) and Rear Cross Barracks (12 July 1920); ambushes at Silvermines (September 1920) and Kilcommon (December 1920); and attacks on RIC at Knockfune and Rear Cross (July 1921). Applicant also claims he took part in disruption of communications, raiding mails, raiding for arms and instructing 6 Battalion in musketry.
During the Truce period applicant attended training camps. During the Civil War he blocked roads around Nenagh and spent three (3) weeks guarding Ignatius O'Neill, a captured Free State (National Army) officer. He states that he was arrested in November 1922 and released in January 1923. He refers to a fight at Curreeny (date not recorded) and claims he did intelligence work until the cease fire.
