Subject Information File relates to Denis Gleeson's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: unsuccessful ambush at Ballina; attack on Portroe RIC Barracks (January 1921); burning of Derry Castle (date not recorded); and raid on Portroe Post Office. Applicant also claims he took part in transporting arms and ammunition, disruption of communications, despatch carrying for the IRA, During the Truce period applicant claims he attended training camps in Slate Quarry and Derry Castle. During the Civil War applicant took part in fighting against National Army forces at O'Brien's Bridge (July 1922), Bushfield ambush (August 1922) Kilcommon and Upperchurch ambushes (January 1923), Moneygall ambush (February 1923) and refers to the burning of several houses. Gleeson claims the Brigade column was surrounded in Killoscully (date not recorded) but fought their way out and were on the run for the remainder of the period. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Gleeson in support of his application; copy handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Paddy McDonnell, James O'Sullivan and Sean O'Carroll; typed transcript (2 pages) of sworn statement made by Denis Gleeson on 18 June 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death.
