Subject Information File relates to John Howard’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his son Thomas Howard who was shot and killed by British forces at Lackelly, County Limerick on 2 May 1921. Also includes application from Norah Howard, sister of deceased, for an award. Her application was initially rejected. John Howard received £20 from the White Cross Association. Howard made an unsuccessful application for £6000 compensation under the Compensation (Ireland) Commission. Reference also made to two other sons in receipt of military service pensions. Reference also made to Norah Howard's brother-in-law Patrick O'Donnell (Kilrush, Knocklong, County Limerick) in receipt of military service pension. ST O'Riordan claims that John Howard was a former member of the Fenians and that he was engaged in the Kilmallock Barrack attack in 1867. File contains: report from an Garda Síochána detailing John Howard’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; report from Customs and Excise Officer detailing Norah Howard’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; Military Service Registration Board references from [ST O'Riordan], Patrick O'Donnell and D O'Hannigan; certified copy of death certificate; social welfare reports; material relating to payment of balance of Norah Howard's allowance to her sister.
