Subject Information |
File relates to Michael Keating's unsuccessful applications for a pension under the Military Service Pension Acts, 1934 - 1949 for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923.
Keating held the post of Officer Commanding 3 Battalion, Carlow Brigade at the first critical date (11 July 1921) but was on the run so another officer, Andrew O'Neill, also held the same post. Keating was serving as Vice Officer Commanding Carlow Brigade on the second critical date (1 July 1922). He also refers to service in Dún Laoghaire with 6 Battalion, Dublin Brigade where he was using the pseudonym Ned Furlong. Keating claims he was arrested 16 August 1918 and imprisoned for twelve (12) months in Belfast and Manchester jails. He states that he was also arrested in October 1922 and interned until an unspecified date after September 1923.
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Keating in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Patrick Cleary, Eugene Davis, Daniel Byrne, William Keenan, George Kelly and Andrew McDonnell; and standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by the Carlow IRA brigade committee. According to a memorandum dated 12 December 1940 Keating was summoned for interview on two (2) occasions but did not attend and did not reply to a request in July 1940 for a statement of his activities. A later pension application by Keating under the 1949 act was also unsuccessful.
File also contains correspondence from the Establishment Officer, Department of Defence, relating to Keating's employment as a Temporary Clerk with Supply and Transport Corps in 1953. Keating was 66 years of age and approaching retirement; the Establishment Officer stated that Keating's National Service during the revolutionary period may warrant an appeal for his retention beyond the normal retirement age.
DP29516: contains notice requesting a Special Allowance form be sent to Michael Keating (dated 8 January 1958).
