Subject Information File relates to Patrick Daly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: prepared ambushes at Cloughjordan (dates not recorded); attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks [June 1920]; ambush at Gurtygarry; and ambush at Modreeny (dates not recorded). Applicant states he was arrested in November 1920 in connection with the murder of Constable Maxwell of Cloughjordan but released in December 1920. During the Truce period applicant instructed in a training camp at Camross, Laois and served at Divisional Headquarters in Roscrea and in Birr Barracks. During the Civil War applicant took part in fighting against National Army forces in Portumna and in an ambush at Boher. He states that he was arrested 2 October 1922 and interned Templemore, Maryboro, Tintown camps until his release 1 February 1924. Daly was in receipt of a British Army Pension in respect of ill-health attributable to his internment as a prisoner of war in Germany. He lost this pension following his arrest in November 1920. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Daly in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Frank McGrath, Neil Blaney, William Gill, Martin Ryan and Sean Gaynor; typed transcript (4 pages) of sworn statement made by Patrick Daly on 16 May 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statements made by James Murphy and Patrick Hogan on behalf of Daly; correspondence relating to subject's receipt of public monies through his employment as a road worker for North Tipperary County Council; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed. DP19041 File relates to subject's application for Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts, 1943 to 1959. Allowance awarded in 1957 upon proof of applicant being incapable of self support by reason of permanent infirmity.
