Subject Information File relates to Michael Morrissey's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: burning of Cashel Courthouse; action with British Lancers at Blackcastle; and outpost duty for attack on Drangan Barracks (dates not recorded). Applicant also claims he took part in carrying despatches, guarding spies, scouting, disrupting communications and guarding IRA officers including Dan Breen and Seamus Robinson. Morrissey says he helped capture and guard three (3) unnamed British officers whom he claims were court-martialled and shot. During the Truce period applicant attended a company training camp in Donegal (Clerihan, Tipperary) and went into Fethard Barracks. Morrissey claims he went on to Tipperary to be trained to use a machine gun. During the Civil War applicant states that he served as a lewis gunner fighting against National Army forces at Ninemilehouse, Fethard, Rosegreen and in the Slievenamon Mountains and that he sniped on military lorries and Free State columns. He was arrested 2 December 1922 and interned in an unnamed location until the general release in December 1923. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Morrissey in support of his application; signed handwritten letter regarding subject's service and activities from Jerome Davin; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Michael Morrissey on 14 December 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and material relating to settlement of subject pension account following his death and to his surviving next of kin - partly closed.
