Subject Information File relates to Denis Delaney's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: Modreeny ambush [3 June 1921] and firing on RIC outside Roscrea (dates not recorded). Applicant states he was on the run before joining Collison's active service unit (flying column) early in 1920. Reference also claims Delaney took part in training camps and was part of the garrison at Maryborough Barracks during the Truce period. Delaney enlisted in the National Army 27 February 1922 and served in the Motor Transport Corps and in Gormanston Camp prior to his discharge, time expired, 2 October 1924. File includes: material submitted by subject in support of his service pension application; handwritten notes [of evidence given by Delaney before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; material relating to subject's National Army and Defence Forces service record; original signed handwritten references from Commandant M. Gantly, Major P.A. Mulcahy and Commandant Liam Hoolan; letter dated 24 September 1971 refers to subject holding a Service (1917-1921) Medal and to his widow, Ellen Delaney holding a Service (1917-1921) Medal for her service with Cumann na mBan (her medal reference MD47335); and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
