Subject Information File relates to Ignatius O'Neill's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919 and with the IRA for the periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. O'Neill states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1916. O'Neill claims that he took part in the attack on Connolly RIC Barracks, Miltown Malbay and Monreal (Moanreel). Reference from TF Bowman claims that O'Neill took part and was wounded in the Rineen ambush; ambush at Crowe's Bridge and attacks at Darra, Ruan Barracks and Doolin, County Clare. Major General Brennan in his reference to the Board of Assessors states that in the Truce period O'Neill was whole-time in training camps. Applicant claims that he joined the National Forces at Ennis, County Clare in April 1922 and that on 1 February 1924 he held the rank of Colonel Commandant. O'Neill retired from the Defence Forces on 20 December 1938 at the rank of Commandant. Also includes claimant's application for a Disability Pension for injuries received in March and September 1920. As claimant died before the case could be investigated, his death determined the claim. File contains: handwritten notes of interview with Board of Assessors Military Service Pensions Act, 1924; references from Major General Brennan, TF Bowman and Thomas Quinn; material relating to funeral expenses; certified copy of death certificate; material relating to payment of pension to widow; material relating to family partly closed.
