Subject Information File relates to Thomas Finn's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. File also contains material relating to the payment of a disability gratuity of forty pounds to Finn in 1936. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: destruction of Bruree RIC Barracks (April 1920); attack on Ballylanders RIC Barracks (April 1920); attack on Kilmallock RIC Barracks (May 1920); Bruree ambush (July 1920); and Glenacurrane ambush (December 1920). Applicant also claims he took part in raids for arms, disruption of communications, raids on mails, transport of arms and ammunition, guard duty over a captured enemy airman and preparations for some unsuccessful ambushes at Loughgur, Ballybunoake and Howardstown. Finn states he was absent from duty for three (3) weeks in May 1921 with a leg injury received in the course of his service. During the Truce period applicant states he did special duty in Kilmallock with a force of thirty (30) IRA men assisting with labour disturbances in the area. Finn states he was drafted to Dublin to Marlborough Hall and served as a Sergeant in Rory O'Connor's Army in Dublin in February or March 1922. During the Civil War applicant took part in fighting against National Army forces at Kilmallock (July 1922), Bruff (July 1922), Knocklong (August 1922), and Emly (September 1922). Finn was arrested 1 November 1922 and interned in Hare Park Camp until his release in December 1923. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Finn in support of his application; signed handwritten letter regarding subject's service and activities from David Cremins; typed transcript (2 pages) of sworn statement made by Thomas Finn on 13 November 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed.
