Subject Information File relates to Agnes Boyd's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Agnes Boyd states that during the War of Independence she undertook despatch work, intelligence work and the storage of arms, as well as assisting IRA members on the run. She also claims that she did scouting work for the IRA during an attack in Ballina in which an RIC Sergeant Armstrong was killed - date not on file. During the Truce period she claims she assisted the IRA forces occupying Ballina. When National Army Forces took over the town in [June/July] 1922 she claims she carried on intelligence and despatch work as well as acquiring arms and ammunition from a National Army soldier named Walsh who she says later deserted and joined the IRA. She states that during August 1922 she was ordered out of Ballina by the National Army due to her activities but returned when the IRA captured the town in September. She also states that, due to intelligence which she received from her unnamed brother in law who was a member of the National Army, the IRA were able to capture a National Army unit at Dromore West, County Sligo. She further claims that during the Civil War she carried despatches and food to IRA Active Service Unit(s) and Columns, helped to transport IRA men across the River Moy, cared for wounded/injured IRA members in her house and scouted for an IRA unit engaged in destroying a [railway] signal cabin in Killala, County Mayo. She states that two of her brothers were members of the IRA and that an unnamed sister also took part in activities with her.
