Subject Information File relates to Patrick Ahearne's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1919 and states that he mobilised under arms at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising. File also relates to Patrick Ahearne's receipt of payments under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the loss of his left hand as a result of an accidental explosion of a shotgun while he was firing it during a training camp in January 1922. From January 1920 onwards Patrick Ahearne served as a Company Officer Commanding with the IRA. During the War of Independence Patrick Ahearne was involved in organisational and training work as well as the supervision and construction of arms dumps for the IRA. He also claims that during that conflict he took part in arms raids, the destruction of Cashel [RIC] barracks and Courthouse, attacks on [RIC] barracks at Drangan, Clerihan and Lisronagh, fighting against British forces at Blackcastle, the capture of three British Army officers at Fethard and the capturing of an alleged unnamed spy who was later executed by the IRA. During the Truce period Ahearne took part in IRA training camps until his injury in January 1922. Following his recovery he re-joined the IRA and claims to have served as part of a number of IRA garrisons prior to the Civil War. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 he took part in fighting against National Army forces at Fethard and Tullymaine. Arrested on 4 November 1922 Patrick Ahearne was interned in Clonmel Barracks, Kilkenny Barracks and Tintown No.2 internment camp until his release in December 1923. He states that during his internment he took part in a hunger strike.
