File also relates to Liam Hayes' receipt of an award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of wounds received by him during an attack on British forces at Dromkeen on 3 January 1921.
From 1917 to the end of the War of Independence (11 July 1921) Liam Hayes served as a Company, Battalion and Brigade Officer with the Irish Volunteers and IRA as well as serving as a Section Commander with the East Limerick Brigade Active Service Unit. During the Truce period Hayes served as Brigade Quartermaster and later as Brigade Officer Commanding and joined the National Army - date not on file. He served throughout the Civil War and served with the Defence Forces until retiring in January 1943 at the rank of Major General during the Emergency (Second World War).
