File relates to William Brereton's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 to 31 March 1920 and 12 July 1921 to 30 September 1923.
During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part an ambush at Modreeny [date not recorded]. Applicant also claims he took part in trenching roads at Behomore and Cloughjordan, a prepared ambush at Cloughjordan, raiding for arms, raids on mails, burning a disused RIC Barrack and attacking an RIC barracks at Borrisokane [date not recorded].
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Brereton in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Jack Williams, Seán Gaynor and Frank [McGrath]; typed transcript (2 pages) of sworn statement made by William Brereton on 10 May 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statements made by Patrick McDonnell, John Kenny, James Murphy and Seán Gaynor on behalf of William Brereton; handwritten notes relating to discussion(s) held regarding claimant's service and activities with Seán Gaynor; correspondence relating to Brereton's unsuccessful appeal to increase the length of pensionable service awarded to him; and material relating to subject's surviving children - partly closed.
DP31199 File relates to subject's application for Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts, 1943 to 1959. Allowance awarded in 1968. The rate of allowance was increased in 1973 upon the death of the applicants wife.
