File relates to James Scanlan’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his brother Michael Scanlan who was shot by British forces at Thomas Street, Limerick on 27 October 1920 and died at Military Hospital, New Barracks, Limerick. James Scanlan deemed not dependent on deceased.
Also includes application from John and Ellen Scanlan, parents of deceased, for an award.
Letter dated 6 January 1925 states that Scanlan was a military prisoner who was shot while attempting to escape. Rank is variously given as Officer Commanding/Commandant/Captain.
Liam Scanlan claims that deceased was a member of the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood) from 1909 and that he was appointed Commandant by Ernie O'Malley in 1920 at Bruree, County Limerick. Liam Scanlan made application for 1916 and 1917-1921 Service Medals for himself and deceased
