File relates to George Gleeson's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920.
During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: Borrisokane Barrack attack [June 1920]; shooting of an RIC man in Nenagh [November 1920]; ambush at Lisboney churchyard where two [2] RIC were captured and attempted ambushes at Cloughjordan, Kilmore, Silvermines and Castleconnell. Applicant also claims he took part in raids for arms, a raid on the local courthouse for an electric battery, burning of lorries and a black maria in Nenagh [dates not recorded], manufacture of explosives and patrols of Nenagh town.
During the Truce period applicant states that he attended training camps in the Silvermines and at Puckane and was stationed variously in Birr and Nenagh Barracks. When the Civil War broke out applicant states that he was stationed in the National Bank, Nenagh and fought against National Army forces in the town. He states that he served with Tipperary number 1 Column under Paddy McDonnell and fought against National Army forces at Boher, Bushfield Barracks and Silvermines Barracks [dates not recorded]. He was captured January 1923 and interned in Tintown for 12 months and Hare Park Camp for 4 months before his release on 10 June 1924. He states he went on hunger strike while interned.
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Gleeson in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Christopher Byrne, A.F. Cooney, Michael McCormack and the brigade committee for Tipperary Number 1 Brigade; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by the relevant IRA brigade committee; typed transcript (7 pages) of sworn statement made by George Gleeson on 20 January 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes relating to discussion(s) held regarding claimant's service and activities with Messrs Sean Gaynor; extracts from the "United Irishmen" newspaper (May 1953) and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed.
