Subject Information File relates to Patrick Forde's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919. Patrick Forde claims that during the War of Independence he carried out arms raids, police work and despatch carrying for the Irish Volunteers and IRA. He also states that during that conflict he took part in an IRA raid for petrol and steel shutters at Ballina Railway Station, an IRA attack on a police patrol in which an RIC Sergeant Armstrong was killed and another member of the RIC named O'Regan was wounded in [1920], and an attack on two 'Black and Tans (RIC) in [1921]. He also claims to have taken part in the IRA attack on Enniscrone Coastguard Station in [August] 1920. During the Truce period Forde states that he took part in IRA training camps and served as part of the [IRA] garrison at Ballina Workhouse and Ballina Barracks. He also states that during the Truce period he was promoted to Battalion Officer Commanding Communications. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Patrick Forde took part in the evacuation and burning of Ballina Barracks by the IRA. He states he was arrested by National Army forces in July/August of 1922 and interned at Athlone, Mountjoy and Tintown No. 2 internment camp at the Curragh until November 1923. File includes: typed transcript (8 pages) of sworn statement made by Patrick Forde on 19 March 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten standard form Referee R.15 showing details of subject's rank as of 1 July 1922 from records supplied by T. Ruane; handwritten notes of discussion held with Messrs. Calleary and Ruane regarding claimant's service/activities; material referring to subject's employment with Ballina Urban District Council and with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs from the 1930s to the 1950s; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Patrick Forde’s service pension account following his death in 1984 - partly closed.
